A Bywater Homestead Thanksgiving

There is nothing like being with family for Thanksgiving. So we set out for the hills of West Virginia to visit my brothers family on their homestead, Bywater. Our little wagon was packed with all the things a little 4 month old baby would need, big-boy toys, and our dog, Magdalena.

A fall harvest of pumpkins greeted us from the herb garden.

The boys hung out in the "man cave". . .

(my brother's wood working shop)

. . . while the girls made candy houses.

On the homestead is this sweet little house, built by my brother for his daughter . . . I am so jealous!

Since it is hunting season, we dressed Magdalena in an orange t-shirt so she wouldn't be mistaken for a deer if she wandered too far into the woods.

We had a Breakfast Birthday Party for my neice.

Greta enjoyed the festivities . . .

and Buddy, too!

A rare moment when Magdalena and her pal, Buddy, were not hard at play.

We are so blessed to have our wonderful family and we celebrated our blessings with a a great feast. Turkey, green bean casserole, cranberry salad, mashed potatoes (with lumps, please), homemade bread, stuffing, pumpkin pie and my sister's cheesecake. Mmm . . . mmm . . . mmm!

At the end of the day, we all gathered around the campfire and enjoyed a beverage and good conversation.

A great time was had by all.

Capital Style Magazine "Crave"

One of my favorite jewelry designs is featured in this months issue of Capital Style magazine in their "Crave" section. A version of the token necklace, this 30" ball chain necklace is adorned with a passage from an 1881 bible enclosed in a glass vial. Other adornments include skeleton keys, vintage brass tags, and sparrow pendants. Available at SoBo Style in Clintonville.

Butterfly Mobile

When the time came to decorate our nursery, I wanted to keep it simple. A space that I could relax in and be comfortable since I was going to spend a lot of time in it. One item that I kept tossing around was a mobile for the crib. I already had a vintage floral chandelier hanging over the crib on a dimmer switch (which has been so nice in the wee-hours of the night). But the time had come that I needed something more for Baby Greta. I thought about stuffed fabric birds since the vintage fabric I used in the bedding had some birds among the flowers, but all Baby would see was the bottom. I wanted something that would be seen from Greta's point of view, but also from mine. Something lightweight to move and grab her attention.

This lovely gift from Sandy from Rhubarb Reign became my inspiration.

I downloaded a picture of a butterfly on the computer and printed on a page from that antique bible that I use in my jewelry, medallion ornaments and candle holders.

Next, I cut around two butterflies and sandwiched a black piece of paper between them.

I wanted the butterflies to have depth, so I used a jewelry finding and beads, layering the paper between the beads.

Then I added fishing line (or "monofiliment", as my friend, Katie, likes to call it) and tied them to the chandelier at various lengths.

I always have a fan on to keep the air circulating and to create some "white noise",

so my butterflies slowly flutter.

I love them . . .

and I think Greta does, too!

So much more appealing then the mobiles at the major shopping chains. Matches my neutral decor and I used the materials I already had on hand. Voila!

Saturday Trunk Shows at SoBo Style in Clintonville

Throughout the month of October, SoBo Style has been hosting "Saturday Trunk Shows" featuring local artist. I am thrilled to be included in this group of creative and talented folks. This Saturday, October 22nd from 10am - 2pm, Hedy Regal Designs will "be in the house". I am still working on the final inventory list, but be assured that my signature jewelry line of token necklaces and watch part rings will be included. Looking forward to seeing you there.

SoBo Style is located at 3282 North High Street in Clintonville, Ohio. Private parking is available behind the shop or on-street parking on North High Street, Como Avenue and Longview Avenue.

Olde Worthington Market Day 2011

The Olde Worthington Market Day is one of my favorite shows. By the end of Septemeber in Central Ohio, Fall has set in and you can bet that the air will be cool and crisp, and the sun is warm on your skin. This calls for dressing in layers as the early mornings are cold, but by the afternoon you need to peel off a layer or two. This year was no exception to that.

This year was a little different for me because I now have a little one at home that must be tended to, so getting out the door and off to the show was a challenge, but I got there in plenty of time to get my tent and displays set up for the openning.

I met so many new people and caught up for a moment or two with old friends. By mid afternoon all the token necklaces and watch-part rings were sold and I was trying to assemble more.

The day ended at 4:30 and I packed my stuff and hurried home to see my awaiting family. Overall, a great day that left me with great satisfaction.

Our daughter, Greta.

After many years of trying for a baby, our prayers were finally answered in late July. We are so blessed to have this precious gift from God.

Eco Chic Craftacular was Eco Funtastic!

The 3rd Annual Eco Chic Craftacular was so much fun. My booth space was right in front of the indoor stage, so I had a great view of live music and belly dancing.

This week I introduced the vintage wristwatch keepsake necklace. The "wallpaper" on the back of the watch case is a page from a 129 year old Bible. Stunning!

Michelle, designer for Goat Hill Productions, commissioned me to make these gorgeous earrings! I love them so much that I am going to make a pair for myself and also have some available at my next show.

Double-prism crystal earrings with shamrock adornments.

Sweet sparrows adorn these double-prism crystal earrings.

Upcycled trinkets include brass tags from the old coal mines, watchmakers vials, skeleton keys, game pieces and pages from that 1882 Bible.

Watch-part rings were a huge hit at this show!

Artisan Sunday at the North Market

I am so excited about this upcoming weekend . . . it is my first show of 2011 and it's at the North Market's Artisan Sundays event noon-5PM. I love being outdoors in the early spring . . . the crisp air, the sunshine (fingers crossed), green grass and singing birds.

Craft shows are so much fun. I love the merchandising, I love getting my signature inventory ready and creating new items for the season. I love the vendor food and I especially love the energy that comes with all the people.

I am participating on the first Sunday of each month (May-October), so please plan to drop by and experience it all for yourself.

After several weeks of nausea, I am finally regaining my energy and ready to get back into the studio. 2nd Annual Holiday Open House

The 2nd Annual Holiday Open House was so much fun.

It was elbow-to-elbow at times in a buying frenzy for holiday gifts and treasures.

Tah-dahhhh . . .

My medallion ornaments made from the pages of a 120 year old bible.

They were a big hit and were totally wiped out by the end of the first evening.

Hedy's Holdiay Open House

Last year I opened my home to friends and family for an evening of shopping handcrafted jewelry, gifts, holiday and home decor . . . and it was amazing, so I am doing it again this year.

I know we are all really busy this time of year so I am making it a two night event, so you can drop by whenever it is most convenient for you.

The 2nd Annual Holiday Open House is on Wednesday AND Thursday, December 1 AND 2nd, 2010 from 5-9PM.

Cindy, the creator of Cindygert sweater purses and bags. Impeccable construction and artful design. We will miss Cindy this next year as she and her family will reside in Germany for a while. Can't wait to see what she creates while abroad.

Heather Kramb's vintage collage jewelry? Well, who could pass that up? I HAD to snag a beautiful bracelet but only after MUCH debate over which one . . . She has an eye for the exquisite vintage gems and artfully collaborates it with crystals and buttons.

The antique creepy crawlies and animal prints that Mary brought were just perfect for

finishing one's spooky decor.

I adore the Colette Pattern collection . . . vintage-inspired classic womens skirts, tops, dresses, bloomers and now the Lady Grey coat.

I made the shop sample from a charcoal wool and lined it with a turquoise satin. Just lovely. I am teaching this class at Sew to Speak in Clintonville and already the first class is full with three more students on the waiting list. I had so much fun at this event. I just love the merchandising, meeting new people, catching up with old friends, networking with fellow artisans, and the joy of witnessing someone falling in love with something I made.

Reusable canvas shopping totes stencilled with fabric paint. I love how the spray paint is a bit uneven . . . military-style. I made these pennants with ivory, Idaho potato, and black burlap . . . I could hardly wait to hang them in the booth! One of my favorites!

The Iris' are so sweet smelling and pretty, but only last about a week to 10 days.

Same goes for the Lilac bush . . . I love the scent, but the flowers are only in bloom about a week.

In the April 2010 Columbus Monthly publication, Sobo Style was featured in the shopping section. In the photo is my little vintage slipcovered vanity stool. I made a crinlin petticoat with a satin pink, burgandy, and cilantro vintage fabric slipcover. The detatchable cushions are adorned with vintage crocheted buttons . . . just darling! (Sold)

Celebrate Earth Day 2010

Yeah, Earth! We celebrated Earth Day this year by honoring our little oak tree that
I rescued last year from our yard. I do not claim to have a green thumb by any means, most plants don't survive at my house for very long . . . it's sad, but true. We are working on our backyard landscaping this summer and will plant this little guy in our yard then.

I have also started my container garden . . . lettuce and rosemary, so far.

From seedlings, I have started some cilantro, basil, oregano, and mint . . . let's just wait and see what my harvest will be.

A few weeks ago, Traci from Whimsy in Morris, Illinois contacted me about participating in an upcoming event at her darling shop. May 6th is "Ladies Night Out" at Whimsy. In addition to storewide savings, refreshments, and new merchandise, there will be the Hedy Regal Designs trunk show. I am putting togeather some great token necklaces, religious medallion necklaces, and the Spring line of bow-tie necklaces plus a few other things. Eco Chic Craftacular Event May 22 and 23

Great news . . . Hedy Regal Designs will participate in the 2nd Annual Eco Chic Craftacular event on May 22 and 23 at the Whetstone Community Center in Clintonville. It's "a two day arts and crafts show celebrating artistic talent and supporting living locally and living green!"

We will be donating portions of our proceeds to the Whetstone Community Center and Local Matters organizations to promote green living in our communities.

Enjoy a day, or two, of local eco-friendly art, live music, and stuff for the kids.

Sew to Speak in Clintonville is a darling little "diy" shoppe. Anita Bowman and her staff are most helpful when trying to choose a project. The shop is bright, fun, and inspiring . . . I can never choose just one project. It is definately a place to stop in when you are in the area and get inspired too. Simple to complex, Sew to Speak has projects for all skill levels. Don't know how to sew? Then sign up for one of the many classes offered on-site.

Not only does it have unique vintage furniture and finds, but also all a gal needs when looking for gifts for girlfriends, sisters, moms, and moms-to-be. Katie started Sobo Style 9 years ago and has really developed a strong following and she has been nice enough to help me get my goods to the public by selling the Religious Medallion Necklaces, the Upcycled Bib Necklaces, and the Watch-Part Rings. Upcycled Neckties

My latest project consists of upcycled mens neckties. The quality of the fabric, the intricate designs, and the rich colors make great starter pieces for my bib necklaces and neckwear. I start by disassembling the tie and removing the stabilizing fabric. After washing and pressing, I make a gathering stitch along the folded edge. Carefully, I attach the gathered tie to a piece of felted wool fabric that I previous cut out. Some neckwear is simple, others are embellished with vintage buttons, crystals, or other found objects. I like the way Sobo Style described these pieces . . . more than a scarf, but less than a necklace.

And so it begins . . .

It all started when I switched from having an answering machine to having voicemail. Then, I got the cell phone for "emergencies". Soon I was using it AND my voicemail all the time and decided I didn't need the home phone and answering machine anymore. Next came e-mail . . . which hasn't completely made snail mail obsolete (geesh, somehow we have to receive the items that we are ordering on-line), but I had my personal e-mail, then one for the shop, then another for Hedy Regal Designs. People told me "you need a website", so I made a website for the shop. . . . then a MySpace account . . . oh no, everyone has now switched to Facebook. Okay, okay. I am on FB, too. And we can't forget Etsy and E-bay . . . and in trying to keep up with the tech-world, I am now a blogger. Enjoy.
